Manual J Load Calculator

Estimate your home's heating and cooling load the way a Manual J calculation does: from the insulation in the walls and attic, the windows, how airtight the house is and your local design temperatures. Results are a whole-house block load, not a room-by-room report.

What a Manual J calculation is

Manual J is the residential load calculation method published by the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA). It adds up every path heat takes into or out of a house: through walls, ceilings, floors and windows, with outside air leaking in, from sunlight on the glass, and from the people and appliances inside. The result is the heating and cooling capacity the house needs on a design day.

The International Residential Code requires a Manual J for new HVAC systems in many jurisdictions, and Manual S, the companion equipment selection method, sets how far above the load the equipment may be sized.

Example results

Single-story, 2,000 sq ft homes with 8 ft ceilings, four occupants and attic ductwork, calculated with this tool.

The 1970s house has no wall insulation, R-19 in the attic, single-pane windows and leaky construction. The new home has R-21 walls with foam sheathing, R-49 in the attic, low-E windows and tight construction.

How this calculator works

  1. House shape. The footprint is the floor area divided by the number of stories, treated as a square. Wall area is the perimeter times wall height; window area is a share of floor area; one 40 sq ft door is included.
  2. Conduction. Each surface's U-factor (the inverse of its assembly R-value) times its area times the indoor-outdoor temperature difference. Attic ceilings use an extra 30 °F in summer for a hot attic. Slab edges lose heat at 0.55 BTU/h per foot of perimeter per °F.
  3. Air leakage. Natural air changes per hour of 0.7 (leaky), 0.4 (average) or 0.2 (tight), increased 25% in winter. Sensible load is 1.08 × CFM × temperature difference.
  4. Solar gain. Window area times the glass solar heat gain coefficient times 32 BTU/h per sq ft, an average across orientations.
  5. Internal gains. 230 BTU/h of sensible heat per person and 1,600 BTU/h for appliances and lighting.
  6. Ducts. Ducts in an attic or crawlspace add 15% to heating and 20% to cooling; basement ducts add 5% and 8%.
  7. Latent load. Moisture removal adds 5% (dry), 15% (moderate) or 25% (humid) to the sensible cooling load.

Why Manual J beats rules of thumb

Rules such as 500 or 600 sq ft per ton of cooling were set decades ago for houses with little insulation and leaky windows. A well-insulated modern home often calculates at 900 to 1,500 sq ft per ton. Sizing it by the old rule produces an air conditioner one to two tons too large, which short-cycles and leaves the house humid.

ACCA Manual S allows cooling equipment up to 115% of the total cooling load (up to 125% for heat pumps in heating-dominated climates) and furnaces up to 140% of the heating load. The calculator shows those limits under the result.

Limits of a block load

This tool treats the whole house as one zone. A full Manual J also works room by room to size each supply duct, uses each window's actual orientation and shading, and uses exact design temperatures for your county. Use these results to check a contractor's proposal or plan a project. For a permit or for duct design, ask for a complete Manual J report from software such as Wrightsoft or Elite RHVAC.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do a Manual J calculation myself?

You can estimate one with this tool or with free software, using your home's insulation, windows and air tightness. A contractor's Manual J adds room-by-room detail, exact window orientations and duct design.

How much does a professional Manual J cost?

Many HVAC contractors include it in a replacement quote. As a standalone service from an energy auditor or design firm, it usually costs $100 to $300 for a typical house.

Why is my Manual J result smaller than my old AC?

Older systems were often sized by rules of thumb with generous margins, and many homes have since had insulation, windows or air sealing improved. A smaller, correctly sized system dehumidifies better and runs more efficiently.

What is a design temperature?

The outdoor temperature that is exceeded only 1% of hours in summer (cooling) or that is colder than 99% of hours in winter (heating), based on decades of weather data for your area.

Is Manual J required by code?

The International Residential Code requires heating and cooling equipment to be sized by Manual J and Manual S. Enforcement for replacements varies by city and state.

This is a simplified block-load estimate for planning. It does not replace a full ACCA Manual J performed with approved software.
